Caspar Craven's inspiring book about creating change in your life was released in the US in March and he's been touring the States, from New York to San Francisco and various points in between, spreading the message!<br />
<br />
I'm delighted to say that today, having seen international contacts at London Book Fair this week, as I write to people with updates I see that the book is #1 in New Releases on Boating on <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Where-Magic-Happens-Family-Changed/dp/1472949919/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1523556469&sr=8-1&keywords=Where+the+Magic+Happens">Amazon.com</a>, in the top 50 in Family Travel and in the top 100 in all Sailing titles. And this, as Caspar would say, is just the beginning...<br />
<br />
Here's some of the latest coverage - and a wonderful story from Caspar that I have to share:<br />

decided to sail around the world with their very young children. Most people thought
they were crazy. Maybe they were. They didn't have a boat. They didn't have the money to go sailing around the world for two years. Nichola had only been sailing twice. How would homeschooling work? They were way beyond their comfort zone.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;"><span style="color: #cfe2f3;">Change is never easy, especially when it’s in another city or, better yet, another country. Verant (Seven Letters from Paris, 2014) managed to do it, with a few challenges along the way, and provides readers a charming and witty look at how in this memoir. The Chicago girl moves to southwestern France to be with her new husband and his children, and is enthralled by a new life in a quaint city, but it’s not everything she expected. After many struggles while trying to raise her stepchildren (and having them develop into testy teenagers), along with not always seeing eye-to-eye with her husband, and dealing with a terrible tenant, Verant’s doubts about her new life continue to grow bigger. Luckily, Verant and her husband’s love of cooking has always helped bring them together, giving them a foundation that is unbreakable. Verant’s memoir touches on universal, real-life themes, like love, loss, and family, while mixing in plenty of delicious French flavors (and actual recipes) that make for a tasty read that’s true to the heart. — Carissa Chesanek, Booklist</span></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">This sinister thriller is inspired by several highly publicised crimes
such as the case of Josef Fritzl in Austria and the imprisonment of Natacha
Kampusch.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">When stories of serial killers or sex offenders hit the news, we are not
only intrigued by the perpetrators of the crime but also the other people in
their lives who may or may not have known about these horrendous activities
while they were taking place. It’s usually female family members who find
themselves under the greatest public scrutiny; Sonia Sutcliffe, wife of the
Yorkshire Ripper was involved in a famous defamation case. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">And when women come under media scrutiny they
are judged not only by what they may or may not have done, but also on their
appearance. Who can forget unflattering images of Primrose Shipman
covering the front pages? The women, even if guilty only by association, are in
some way made out to be more culpable than the men – we expect women to be
caring, compassionate, decent. This is why the character of Marion, and the
reader’s reaction to her, was particularly interesting to me. I also wanted to raise the question of how
far someone would go to protect a loved one, even if they’d done something
terrible.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">THE SETTING<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">British seaside towns have a peculiarly sinister air: rickety fairground rides threaten
dismemberment or even death, children splash on the beach while parents worry
about them being swept out to sea, stacks of
garish toys tempt you to throw away your money on rigged fairground
games. Many northern seaside resorts grew prosperous as a
result of the Industrial Revolution. Victorian patriarchs paraded their
families along the promenade and gasped at freak shows, spending money earned
from the misery of mill workers and slavery. The theme of pleasure being obtained
from the suffering of others is clearly present in the novel.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">IMMIGRATION; THE OTHER<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: "cambria" , serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The women that John victimises are all ‘foreign.’ To some extent Marion
manages to distance herself from their suffering because of this. There is a
sense that if he didn’t imprison them, they would become criminals or ‘benefit
scroungers.’ I think many people in affluent Western cultures tend to
treat the suffering of people from certain foreign cultures as less valid. Perhaps this tendency is an inevitable reaction
to the media bombardment of depictions of human suffering in far flung
locations and a feeling of helplessness to do anything about it. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Publishers' Weekly <br />
Scout Welcomes Burns’s ‘Visitors’<br />
In a U.S.-rights deal at Simon & Schuster’s new literary imprint Scout Press, Alison Callahan bought Catherine Burns’s novel, The Visitors. David Forrer at Inkwell Management brokered the deal for Burns, who is British, on behalf of U.K.-indie Legend Press. Calling the novel “Grey Gardens meets Room,” S&S said The Visitors, which is scheduled for winter 2018, follows a spinster who must confront the “horror” that her brother has kept under lock and key in the basement of their crumbling mansion.<br />

World English rights in THE VISITORS were sold by Jennifer Barclay Books to Legend Press in June. The author, Catherine Burns, was born in Manchester to a trade unionist and a school cleaner. She graduated from Cambridge and worked as a bond trader in the City of London before studying at the Moscow institute of film and teaching film theory at Salford University. <br />

Andrew Fraser goes on a jaunt around ten European cities including Skopje, Girona, Brussels, Thessaloniki, Gdansk and Oslo for £144 and describes how aspiring travellers can create their own dream travel itineraries on flights that cost less than an airport latte. Uncovering the little known travel gems which you can fly to for under a tenner, it is also an often surreal, idiosyncratic and funny account of one man's adventures on the move.<br />
<br />
John Carter, having spent half a century globetrotting during an illustrious career as a travel writer and TV presenter, seeing the world via press trips, cruise ships and Concorde, recounts the tales he couldn't tell at the time: being savaged by a duck during the Pamplona bull running, meeting Sophia Loren and drinking vodka with Walter Kissinger, sharing a small island with a bottom-biting hippo, eating scorpions on toast and taking an unplanned flying lesson.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">It is often alone late at night, with a glass of wine in my

finishing line, arms aloft, in the pole position of a race that I shouldn’t
have started, let alone win. I was 17 at the time, and pulled in as an eleventh
hour replacement to run the 800 metres race for my school in the regional athletics
championships. My opponents had no idea who I was; but against all the odds I left
them flailing in my wake on the last bend. Overnight I became a school hero,
and for about a year afterwards I believed that this was what the rest of my
life was going to be like. A series of spectacular dashes to glory. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work out like that. Like most
people, I’ve had my moments, but I’ve also had my fair share of disappointments.
One of the biggest of these was a couple of years ago when a travel book I had
written missed out on getting a traditional book publishing deal when at one
point things looked hopeful. I had some nice feedback from book editors, Simon
has “a rather charming voice” said one, but in the end I didn’t make the cut. At
that point, I had to make the painful decision to self-publish.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Yet, self-publishing can bring its own rewards, not least
the sense of personal achievement in doing the whole thing yourself. So how did
I go about it? Well, at one end of the spectrum are the services of a

there is everything in-between. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

with good reputations – which can take your manuscript, prepare it for
publication, publish it and make it available in book stores and through online
retailers. This full service comes at a price – <i>Silverwood</i>’s cheapest package starts at £1795 – but, in return, you
get a published book for a minimum amount of hassle. Should your budget not
stretch that far, though, the same firms can offer tailored one-off services
such as copy-editing, ISBN registration, cover design and book promotion. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">These might be of help if you are doing it all yourself,
with a little help here and there. The DIY route was the one I chose, mainly
for financial reasons. My first port-of-call was getting someone to look over
my manuscript and check it for any mistakes in syntax (copy-editing). For this
job I took on the services of an editorial contact (or rather a contact of a
contact) who promised to give my copy the once over for a fee of £250.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">All my words would have been worthless, however, if they had
not been pleasing to the eye when they appeared in book format. My next
challenge was the typesetting and formatting of my raw text into a particular
typographical style – a challenge made doubly difficult by the fact that I was
running to a tight budget. Some in my situation would have done it themselves,
using a simple layout software; but in the end I decided to turn to <i>Createspace</i>, the assisted
self-publishing arm of <i>Amazon</i>. For £140
upwards, depending on which service you choose, their designers based in
Charleston in the US will consult with you over fonts and chapter headings and
all that sort of thing, and come up with something that looks professional and
readable. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">The Charleston outfit can do a lot of other stuff for you
too, but it was to a local designer near my home in Warwickshire, England, that
I looked to for the design of my book cover. This artwork needs to communicate
the ethos of your book so choose your graphic designer carefully. You also need
to be aware that designing the cover is not only about looking good but also
about getting the dimensions right. In order to comply with<i> Createspace</i> specifications, my designer had to think about the ‘trim
size’ and ‘bleed’ and things like that, and that bumped up her fees to about £600.
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">One of the most important features of the cover is the ISBN
product number. This is essential if you want bookshops or Internet retailers
to order copies of your publication. Registering with <i>Nielsen</i>, the UK’s ISBN agency, for example, puts you on their
international bibliographic database, which is used by libraries and
booksellers across the world. You can order a single ISBN number from Nielsen for
around £75. The bar code, which is created from the ISBN, can then be sourced
from a number of suppliers for £25 or so. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">With my bar code in place, I was now ready to publish at what
I regarded as a reasonable cost. But as I said earlier, there are a number of
paths a would-be independent publisher can follow. Mine was just one of them,
and another might or might not have saved me more money. For every person who
takes the DIY route, there is another who will buy a full package from a self-publishing
company. For every <i>Createspace</i>, meanwhile,
there is another print-on-demand provider such as <i>Lulu</i>. And for every <i>Kindle
Direct Publishing</i> there is another e-book platform such as <i>Kobo</i>, or a distributor like <i>Ingram Spark</i> who can help you reach a
lot of different platforms at the same time. If you need more advice then seek
out the <i>Alliance of Independent Authors</i>,
the professional association for authors who self-publish. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">But how did my efforts turn out, I hear you ask. Well,
through the <i>Createspace</i> service, I
uploaded the print version of my book – <i>Mudlark
River</i> – to the A<i>mazon</i> online
bookstore, and then shortly afterwards an e-book version of it to <i>Kindle</i>. The uploading was free by the
way, but there were a few costs that seemed to appear out of nowhere which served
to dampen earnings. With<i> Createspace’s</i>
print books you earn 60% royalties, but that’s after you’ve coughed up two
printing charges – one, a fixed fee per book, and the other is a charge per
page which, though tiny, soon mounts up when you have 343 of them. So, think
carefully about pricing. E-book earnings are much better. An author earns 70%
royalties with <i>Kindle Publishing</i> and
there are no costs to speak of. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">So, to sum up, self-publishing is never going to fund a
retirement in the Caribbean. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">But then I never thought it would. Some writers, I have
heard, are making a good living out of self-publishing. These are the people
who are beginning to challenge and redefine the rather cloistered, cliquey
world of publishing. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">But for me, going it alone was always about building a
presence for myself. After I published my book, I shelled out £160 to a book
publicity firm to pitch particular magazines and newspapers with a press release,
and I also built a rudimentary website with the help of a geeky friend,
registering my <i>url</i> with a web hosting
service for under £50. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">Small steps, but progress. In my mind’s eye, I am still
running that school race. Self-publishing has given me the legs and the
stamina, but what will happen next is anyone’s guess.</span> <o:p></o:p><br />

Brad was born and raised in the hamlet of Canfield in southern Ontario, and as a child had a 'Huck Finn' existence, building rafts and catching frogs and falling off his bike. He grew up on stories - hockey books and listening to the old-timers in the village. The book is </span><span style="color: cyan; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Diane Esguerra</span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">'s memoir of overcoming grief after the death of her son, when she makes an extraordinary journey in Peru to scatter his ashes. </span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The book has had major national media coverage and received, as I write, 37 reviews on Amazon - all of them 5 star. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">So I'm delighted we're doing more with Eye Books. We have just licensed to Eye Books the rights to <a href="http://mariakatsonis.com.au/"><span style="color: cyan;">Maria Katsonis</span></a>' <span style="color: red;">THE GOOD GREEK GIRL</span>, originally published to great acclaim by our Australian publisher client <span style="color: cyan;">Ventura Press</span> last year. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The book is a memoir of overcoming depression, after she graduated with a Master's degree from Harvard then returned home to care for her parents, and for the UK market it will be re-titled <span style="color: red;">THE MIND THIEF</span>. Maria is a vocal advocate for mental health and a senior government executive. US and translation rights are available. </span><br />

Her next book, HOW TO MAKE A FRENCH FAMILY, about her first few years of life as an instant stepmother and wife in the south of France - filled with food and faux pas - has been sold to US publisher Sourcebooks for spring 2017 publication. UK rights to both books are available.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Sarah Outen</b><i style="font-weight: bold;"> </i>is busy writing her new book, <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dare-Do-Looped-Planet-Adventures/dp/1857886410/ref=la_B006P07W8C_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1451898189&sr=1-2">DARE TO DO</a>. <span style="font-size: large;"><b>Brad Smith</b>'s new novel, <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rough-Justice-Canadian-Crime-Burns/dp/072788560X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1451898649&sr=1-1&keywords=Rough+Justice+Brad+Smith">ROUGH JUSTICE</a>, has been published by Severn House and received this review from <i>Booklist</i>:</span><br />

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">The quintessential Brad Smith hero is an
ex-con attempting to live a quiet life who finds himself drawn back into the
world of violence, usually to help out someone he loves. Following in the
tradition of Ray Dokes (<i>All Hat</i>, 2003) and series hero Virgil Cain (<i>Red
Means Run</i>, 2012), Carl Burns lands in prison after taking a quixotic stand
against corruption and absorbing the unintended consequences. Now out of
prison, he has returned to his small Ontario hometown to support his estranged
daughter, Kate, who is one of three witnesses in the rape trial of the town’s
mayor. The trial goes bad, and Kate slips slowly into addiction and depression.
Burns watches helplessly, biding his time and helping the sister of his ex-wife
attempt to battle a ruthless land-grabber. Typically, Smith combines elements
of the comic caper novel with hard-edged thriller fare, but this time the
comedy and the banter take a backseat to real-world realism. Even in a hard world,
however, there’s</span> <span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;">always room for fighting back, and nobody
does stand-up guys better than Smith.</span></span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">What a day it was for <a href="http://www.sarahouten.com/">Sarah Outen</a>. After five years looping the planet by pedal and paddle, 25,000 miles later she arrived back at Tower Bridge, London. Her mantra was 'smile and breathe'.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">She cycled across Europe, Asia and North America; rowed and kayaked across the North Pacific and most of the North Atlantic. She was halfway across the North Atlantic, battling the bad weather that would leave her in deadly danger from a hurricane, when I relayed to her via her Iridium phone that we had two publishers bidding for the book she would write about the adventure.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">A few days ago, she was able to meet her new publisher, Nicholas Brealey, for the first time while on her final leg of the journey. And after a short rest, she'll be starting to write her book, <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dare-Do-disasters-looped-planet/dp/1857886410/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1446569389&sr=8-2&keywords=Sarah+Outen">DARE TO DO</a>, which will be published in June 2016. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Her first book, <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dip-Ocean-Rowing-Across-Indian/dp/1849531277/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8">A DIP IN THE OCEAN</a>, about her record-breaking solo row across the Indian Ocean in her early twenties, was published by Summersdale just before she set off on her loop of the planet, and I had the opportunity to work with her on it. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The new book will be a challenge in itself because she has so much to tell. Over the last five years she has met with devastating catastrophe, motivated people to do amazing things and encountered unbelievable beauty in the natural world. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Sarah's an inspiration. As she writes, the story of her adventure and inner journey 'will also be a call to action, to redefine your own boundaries, to be courageous, and dare to do.</span>' <br />

This week I'm writing about a son's journey (of sorts) to connect with his father.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">‘<i>Many
years after the deaths of my parents, my aunt handed me a box filled with
letters that my father had written to my mother over the period from 1940 to
1945. This was the starting point of a journey for me to rediscover the father
I had never really known</i>...’<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">I was delighted to have the opportunity to work as editor with author John Searancke on this fascinating story in which we see World War Two through the eyes of an ordinary man from his calling up in 1940 to his release from a prisoner of war camp in Germany in 1945.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">The book's curious title shows how we see the war through the minutiae of daily events - the details the man chose to write to his wife, often downplaying the harrowing experiences he actually lived through - such as the series of bloody skirmishes from the beaches of Normandy until he led his troops to face the formidable might of the SS Panzers, his battle coming to an abrupt end in an orchard surrounded by the enemy. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">John, who was born during these years - the early years of the war when his father was sent on one training course after another - and who makes an appearance through the letters, never really knew his father, so it was a feat of imagination to weave the letters into a fictional 'memoir' based on a vast amount of research. The book is a very good read, especially for anyone interested in that era.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Her book, JUNKIE BUDDHA, is about a journey of discovery when she went to scatter the ashes of her son, a year after he died of an accidental heroin overdose. Her talk was about attempting to create value through loss. 'As a Buddhist I believe that life is precious,' she writes, 'and that value can potentially be created through any suffering - however harrowing.'</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Diane is a writer and a psychotherapist who lost her only child, Sacha, ten years ago. Sacha, like many addicts, was more than 'just a junkie', she writes. To his friends and family he was wise, gentle, creative, handsome and kind - a global and spiritual traveller, a lover of animals and nature. He had hiked the Inca Trail and said he'd love to return to watch the sun rise over the sacred citadel of Machu Picchu. Diane travelled there to scatter his ashes.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The journey wasn't an easy one - but it helped to reconnect her with life. On her return, she set up Greenlight Healing and Personal Development Consultancy. <div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">A Surrey rugby club, Warlingham
RFC, will swap the training pitch for the London theatre stage this September.
Players from Warlingham and neighbouring clubs will stage an adaptation of Steven
Gauge’s book <i>My Life as a Hooker</i> at the Museum of Comedy in Bloomsbury from 21 September as England hosts the Rugby World Cup finals. Warlingham
RFC is the club where England Rugby captain Chris Robshaw played his rugby as a
young boy. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The play tells Steven Gauge’s
story of taking up rugby at the age of 35 as part of a mild mid-life crisis.
He discovers a weird, wonderful and welcoming selection of players and wins himself
a place in the front row of the Warlingham scrum. He is taught the laws of the
game, in some cases rather painfully by opposition players, but he eventually
rises to become captain of the Warlingham 4th XV.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Warlingham 4th XV
turns out to be the third worst side in Surrey yet under Gauge’s leadership
rises to be only the 4th worst. Audiences will be treated to the
delights of a club tour to Bognor and share the camaraderie, comedy and
sheer joy of grown men of all shapes and sizes chasing an oval ball around a
muddy pitch.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The book <i>My
Life as a Hooker</i> was shortlisted in the British Sports Book awards in
2013 and is published by Summersdale. Journalist and broadcaster Samira Ahmed
said of the book, <b><i>“Steven Gauge writes with charm, wit, intelligence and real insight.”</i>
</b>Luke Benedict, rugby writer for the Daily Mail said, <b><i>“If this is what a midlife crisis
does for you, I want one.”</i></b><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The book has been adapted for the
stage by Steven Gauge who will play himself in the production, supported by a
cast drawn from fellow rugby players from Warlingham and other local clubs. The
play will run from Monday 21 September to Saturday 26 from 7pm. Tickets are on sale now from the Museum of Comedy website: <a href="http://www.museumofcomedy.com/">www.museumofcomedy.com</a>.
The play is part of the Festival of Rugby 2015 and coincides with the opening
week of the Rugby World Cup. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">YOU USE A QUOTE FROM HENRY DAVID THOREAU AT THE START OF YOUR BOOK. WAS IT, AS THOREAU WROTE, PLEASANT TO GO TO A PLACE THE WAY A RIVER WENT?<span style="color: red;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Amongst other things
Thoreau was a naturalist and a leading transcendentalist – believing in the
inherent goodness of both nature and people… I thought this was a pretty good
place to start from.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">To follow the Volga
from its birth and to watch her story unravelling in front of my eyes was a
privilege. It was like passing through centuries of Russia’s gilded and varied
history – the river is in so many ways representative of the country through
which it travels. I passed through regions as rich in diverse cultures as they
are in arresting scenery – Orthodox churches and hilltop kremlins share a stage
with the concrete brutality of Stalin’s industrial vision – whilst all the time
meeting Russians who lived their lives a very long way from the skyscrapers of
Moscow.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Russians speak of
the river with a god-like reverence, and spending a prolonged period in its
company I really got a sense of its place amongst the people; it truly is a
thing of spiritual wealth and of hope, not to mention employment and food. The
Volga River is the heart of the country at the heart of the country. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">HOW DID YOU DO THIS JOURNEY, AND WHY?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Travelling the length
of the Volga in one trip had been something I’d harboured thoughts of doing for
a while. For anyone with more than just a passing interest in the country and
its history, it seemed so obvious – here was this great river that sliced through
the heartland of Russia, a river that wasn’t particularly long (relative to
other great rivers) and one that didn’t throw up too many physical challenges (again
, relative)… a river that many Russians would cite as relevant to them for so
many different reasons. Eventually the nudge – well, shove really – that I
needed to get on and do it came when a friend of mine chose to get married in
Astrakhan, a city located right at the end of the river. If that wasn’t a sign
for me to get on with the journey, I don’t know what would have been. I went
for it and will be forever grateful for being handed the excuse.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I made the journey by a
variety of means. Having originally planned in a moment of fancy to row down
the whole length, I eventually ditched the dinghy after about eighty
kilometres, after travelling the gentlest stretch from the source to the
provincial town of Tver. It was then local buses, train, passenger boat; I
hitched the stretch from Yaroslavl to Nizhni Novgorod, eventually getting a
lift from a trucker with a keen interest in thermodynamics, and I walked some
of the more picturesque stretches of the lower Volga. I joined a freight carrier
for the final leg from Volgograd down to Astrakhan as I thought it only
appropriate to complete the journey on the water.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE EXPERIENCE, AND HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR JOURNEY FOR READERS IF YOU HAD TO?</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I like to find stories
about the people of Russia that are essentially fun and uplifting (they do
exist), away from the politics (as much as that is possible). This is a side of
the country I see when I travel there. I see the warmth and generosity of
spirit of the people, something we tend not to hear so much about in the West.
It’s hard to choose a favourite experience, as so many stand out… <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Perhaps the Mamaev
Kurgan: nothing could have prepared me for this memorial to the Battle of
Stalingrad, which was simply mind-blowing in size and statement. I was kindly
taken by a man called Alexi who I’d met only hours earlier on a train. The 82-metre
Mother Russia bearing down on present day Volgograd, sword aloft, is more than
a little intimidating, and a fitting memorial to one of the most brutal battles
of WW2. My enthusiastic guide Alexi then insisted that I stay with him and his
wife in their apartment, which I duly did for the next four days…<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">… Or perhaps my
favourite experience was in the boat along the early stretch from the source,
through a Russia apparently untouched by modernity…<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">… No, the highlight has
to be finishing the journey with friends at a wedding – Russian style! A double
celebration that went on for several days…<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">THIS WASN'T YOUR FIRST JOURNEY THROUGH RUSSIA. WHAT IS YOUR CONNECTION WITH THE COUNTRY?</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Ever since a first
visit to the then Soviet Union with Mr Gardiner’s A-level history class, I’ve
been hooked. My first big trip through Russia was in Max the Campervan
travelling from Tallinn in Estonia to Vladivostok in the Russian Far East, in
the nineties, and I’ve been a long and short term visitor to Russia ever since.
A Russian boss I once had joked that I was ‘just another Englishman coming to
Russia in search of adventure!’ I guess I was then and still am perhaps;
however, nowadays I have good friends in Russia so my motivation to return is
less fanciful. I have lived and worked in St Petersburg over the years and
consider the city something of a home from home – although I increasingly find
myself avoiding the winters.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

It's very peaceful working here in the mornings, with the sound of birdsong and sheeps' bells. But the agency has been buzzing, and it's not just the bees...</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">As a result of discussions at London Book Fair, a deal has just been signed for Canadian author Brad Smith's new novel, tentatively entitled ROUGH JUSTICE, with Severn House. We're excited as it's the first time he's been published in the UK. We're also on the brink of signing a three-book deal for digital editions of his previous novels with another publisher. Stay tuned.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Steven Gauge appeared on Sky Sports with two members of his rugby team who feature in his book, and announced that tickets have gone on sale for the stage version of MY LIFE AS A HOOKER in September.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Ian Moore, after the success of A LA MOD and C'EST MODNIFIQUE, has been asked to speak at the France Show (held at London Olympia) next January. He is currently working on a debut crime novel set in France. I love his new website, too...</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Samantha Verant's SEVEN LETTERS FROM PARIS has been sold in three new territories, Latvia, Hungary and Poland, thanks to her US publisher Sourcebooks. Now returned to France from a very successful book signing at Barnes and Noble in Santa Monica, she has reached the exciting stage of being almost ready with a new book proposal, in spite of having broken a finger...</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Bradt Travel Guides have launched a new anthology, TO OLDLY GO, with stories from adventurous travellers aged 60-plus, and the competition for entries is open until mid-June. I'll be editing it as well as selling the rights - though I don't get to judge the entries! The book will be launched in September.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Thanks, folks: authors, publishers, freelancers and readers! The office assistant isn't much help with checking contracts or reading manuscripts but she ensures I get out for a break regularly...</span></div>
